What regulations require (France)

A sign installed on a street facade requires prior authorization from the town hall (CERFA form 14798), and some communes apply a Local Advertising Regulation (RLP) that frames sizes and brightness. Indoors – including storefronts in most cases – no formalities are required. The Local Tax on Outdoor Advertising (TLPE) only concerns outdoor signs exceeding certain surface thresholds, rarely reached by a restaurant neon sign. Warm white dominates in traditional restaurants and cafes (it's welcoming and doesn't alter the colors of dishes). Red and orange characterize world cuisines – ramen, pizza, grill. Cocktail bars and rooftops prefer bold colors: pink, turquoise, purple. At 10–15 meters, text is comfortably readable from 80 cm long for a short word, 120–150 cm for a full name. Below that, the sign functions more as a light signal than as text to be read.

My establishment is in a protected area (historic buildings) – is it possible?

Often yes, but the opinion of the Architecte des Bâtiments de France is required with municipal authorization. An indoor storefront sign generally remains the solution without formalities.
