LED neon sign buyer's guide: specs, sizes, installation

This is the technical buyer's guide to custom LED neon signs — what the specs actually mean (IP ratings, wattage, tube size), how to pick dimensions for your space, and how installation works. Written for business owners comparing options, without the jargon.

The anatomy of a modern neon sign

A Lumicorne sign is made of three parts: 8 mm LED neon flex tubing (a silicone-sleeved LED strip that glows like glass neon, bent to follow your design), a transparent acrylic (PMMA) backing laser-cut to the outline of your artwork — not a rectangular panel — and a ready-to-plug power supply with 3 meters of cable. Fine details and color fills that can't be bent from tube are UV-printed directly on the acrylic, which is how complex logos stay faithful. Everything is CE-certified and tested lit before shipping.

IP ratings: what "waterproof" really means

An IP (Ingress Protection) rating has two digits: dust, then water. Our standard signs are rated for indoor use. The Waterproof option upgrades the sign to IP67 — fully dust-tight and protected against temporary immersion — which in practice means permanent outdoor mounting through rain, snow and frost. If your sign lives indoors, even in a humid room, you don't need it; for facades, terraces, pool areas and spa corridors, you do.

Power, lifespan, running cost

A typical sign draws about 35 W — the consumption of a household bulb — on a 100–240 V supply. Lit 10 hours a day, every day, that's roughly €25 of electricity per year. LED lifespan is 100,000 hours: over 25 years of daily commercial use. Unlike glass neon there is no gas, no high-voltage transformer, no heat and nothing to shatter: the tube is silicone, safe to touch, silent, and handles on/off cycles without wear (plug-in timers are fine).

Choosing the right size

Pricing and readability follow the longest side of your design; the height follows your artwork's proportions automatically and is displayed before purchase. Rules of thumb from hundreds of installations: 60–80 cm (24–31 in) for storefront windows and interior walls read from a few meters; 100–120 cm (39–47 in) for a main shop sign read from across the street; 150–200 cm (59–79 in) for facades read from a road or parking lot. When in doubt, upload your logo on the quote page — the 3D mockup shows exact dimensions for every size.

Colors and control

Fixed-color signs reproduce your logo's exact colors (black and grey elements become white tubes — a tube must glow). The RGB option (+25%) makes tubes color-changing via the included remote, which also controls brightness and effects on every sign. Warm white flatters food, skin and fabrics; saturated colors maximize street visibility.

Installation, step by step

Every sign ships with 3 mounting kits — through-screws for walls, standoffs for a floating look, and chains for hanging in windows (the glass is never drilled). Mark the holes using the sign itself, drill, mount, plug in: about fifteen minutes with a household drill, no electrician required. The power cable runs 3 meters to the nearest outlet; the supply is ready to plug.

Shipping, warranty, support

DHL Express shipping is included (5 to 7 business days), with customs and taxes covered — the price you see at checkout is final. Every sign carries a 2-year warranty on LEDs, power supply and remote, with after-sales support handled directly on WhatsApp by Pablo, our head of design and production. Payment by card, Apple Pay/Google Pay, or 3 interest-free installments with Klarna.

Technical FAQ

Can it run in cold or hot climates?

Yes — LED flex operates well below freezing and in summer heat. For outdoor exposure, take the IP67 Waterproof option; temperature itself is not the issue, water ingress is.

What voltage do I need?

The supply accepts 100–240 V, so it works worldwide; only the plug format changes. Signs ship with an EU plug — a standard travel adapter solves the rest, or contact us for your region.

Can the acrylic be cut to any shape?

Yes — the backing follows the outer silhouette of your artwork with a small uniform margin, like a die-cut sticker. Rectangles are possible but never required.

How do I clean it?

Unplug, wipe the acrylic with a soft dry or slightly damp cloth. No solvents. That's the entire maintenance schedule for 25 years.

Is it repairable?

Power supplies and remotes are replaceable parts (covered 2 years). The tube itself is a single bent run — in the rare case of damage, contact Pablo on WhatsApp with a photo and we'll sort the fastest fix.
